Let’s Drive Safely

Do not drive without

  • Valid driving licence
  • Vehicle registration certificate
  • Valid vehicle’s insurance certificate
  • Permit and vehicle’s certificate of fitness
  • Valid Pollution under control certificate

Attributes of a good driver

  • Alertness & awareness of surroundings
  • Coolness
  • Consideration for others
  • Politeness & helpful attitude

Good Habits during driving

  • Use both hands on the steering wheel
  • Hands to be at 10 and 2 position
  • Rest gently on steering wheel

Bad Habits during driving

  • One hand on steering wheel
  • Steering by spokes
  • Thumbs inside wheel
  • Crossing arms

Make sure you see other drivers and they can see you by doing the following:

  • Keep a clear view when driving.
  • The windows should not be coated with any material that keeps you from seeing out in any direction.
  • Check and adjust your mirrors and find your blind spots.
  • Check your blind spots by turning your head to look over your shoulder.

Side View Mirror Setting should be 20% inside view and 80% outside view

During driving

  • Obey traffic lights & signs
  • Use Seat Belt – Don’t operate any vehicles without wearing seat belt.
  • While driving – Don’t use mobile phone.
  • Apply parking brakes – Be sure to apply all parking brakes on equipment. Use stoppers/ blocks while parking vehicles in slopes.
  • Be cautious when approaching vehicles – Be careful about approaching machinery without proper signalling.
  • Periodical maintenance of all vehicle shall be ensured.
  • All vehicle shall be equipped with the first-aid kit.

While Braking

The ability to slow down or stop the vehicle is more important than being able to accelerate and change gear. Which may be done:

  • by deceleration as the pressure on the accelerator pedal is relaxed
  • by the applications of the brakes

On a good dry road, the average vehicle should be capable of stopping as per the following table:

While overtaking

  • Ensure necessary speed & acceleration to overtake
  • Check traffic from rear side
  • Alert the driver by horn or flashlights
  • After overtaking return to your lane

While reversing

  • Never reverse from a side road into the main road
  • Check for animals, children etc. before reversing
  • Use horn/ automatic reverse horn while reversing
  • For bigger vehicles use assistance from helper

Essential items to be kept in a vehicle

Jack, Spare Tyre, Hand Tools, Vehicle Documents, Glass Cleaner, First Aid Kit, Fire Extinguisher, Spare Bulbs, Small Towel /Tissue Paper Box /hand wash, water bottle
